"Rhode Island Legislation. A vindication of the committees of the Collonial Assemblies against the charge of having interpolated the printed Collonial Laws, which were first published A.D. 1719," by Preston Cummings of Leicester, Mass. A ms. essay responding to conclusions of John Russell Bartlett in his Records of the colony of Rhode Island (1856-65), concerning the exclusion of Catholics as freemen in an act passed in 1664. From the papers of Charles Deane, Boston (Mass.) merchant and historian.

U.S Boundary Commissioner, antiquarian and bibliographer; John Bartlett was appointed in 1850 to establish the border between Mexico and the United States. He worked in Texas and southern New Mexico until 1852, when he decided to go to San Diego and work from there to the east. He was removed from his position in February 1853.
